LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/”corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching students this lesson, try the following:
- Itβs important for students to use their analysis and comparative skills. Students must be able to identify similarities and differences using the correct vocabulary.
- If your student is struggling, itβs ok to go back to previous lessons to reinforce the properties and vocabulary before proceeding to this point.
- Start by comparing 2D with 2D and 3D with 3D before comparing 2D and 3D.
THEORY
- Before reaching this lesson, students have learned about 2D shapes and 3D shapes separately. Now, itβs time to show that they are related! Students will also be able to differentiate between two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.
- WHATβS THE DIFFERENCE?
- Students already know that a shape can have different sizes and orientations but still be a particular shape based on its properties. Help your student identify the odd one out and have them explain why.
