Key Facts & Information
The EARLY AND PERSONAL LIFE
- Bach was born in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany, on 31 March 1685. Bach came from a family of musicians, stretching back several generations. At the age of seven, he went to school where he received religious instruction and studied Latin and other subjects. The Lutheran faith would influence his later musical works.
- He was orphaned at the age of 10 when both of his parents died. He moved in with his eldest brother, Johann Christoph Bach, who was an organist for St. Michael’s Church in Ohrdruf.
- There he studied, performed and wrote down music and his brother taught him how to play the clavichord (an early piano).
- In 1700, Bach was sent to St. Michael’s School in Lüneburg. It was very prestigious.
- Bach’s time at St Michael’s School was important as it exposed him to European culture and he also sang in the choir, played the organ and harpsichord. Being committed to music, Bach developed a reputation for being very disciplined, methodical and well trained for his age.
- After graduating, Bach gained his first job in 1703. He was the musician at the court of Duke Johann Ernst in Weimar. He served as a jack-of-all-trades, playing the violin and, at times, filling in for the official organist.
- In 1706, Bach applied for a post as organist at the Blasius Church in Mühlhausen. He was paid very well and lived comfortably and had a good choir to work with.
- Later that year, Bach married Maria Barbara Bach, who was his second cousin. They moved to Weimar and had four children together: a daughter, Catharina Dorothea, and three sons, Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel, and Johann Gottfried Bernhard. They had a further three children but they all died in infancy.
- While in Weimar, Bach composed many keyboard and orchestral works and was influenced by composers like Vivaldi, Corelli, and Torelli.
- In 1717, Bach accepted a position with Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen. The prince had a passion for music and Bach played the violin for him and took musical scores along when traveling abroad.
- In 1720, Bach’s wife died suddenly while he was traveling with Prince Leopold.
- A year later, in 1721, Bach met and married Anna Magdalena Wilcke, a young woman who was also a highly gifted soprano.
- They had 13 children together and six survived to adulthood.
- In 1721, he gave tribute to the Duke of Brandenburg by composing and performing a series of orchestral concertos, which came to be known as the Brandenburg Concertos. These concertos are considered to be some of his greatest works.
- By 1740, Bach had developed problems with his eyesight, but he continued to work, travel and perform, playing for Frederick the Great, the king of Prussia in 1747.
In 1749, he started a new composition called The Art of Fugue, but did not complete it. He tried to fix his failing sight by having surgery the following year, but the operation ended up leaving him completely blind. - Bach died in Leipzig on July 28, 1750, after developing complications from the surgery. He was 65 years old.
