Harry Potter
- It consists of seven novels about Harry Potter, a young wizard, and his two companions, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. They were Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry students, and the school was located somewhere in Scotland. The plot revolves around Potter’s battles with Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who wishes to be immortal.
- Fans were enthralled by various genres, including fantasy, drama, school life, and adventure. The author’s main theme is death, but prejudice, corruption, and madness are also visible in the plot.
- It achieved worldwide recognition, attracting not only the intended audience of older children but also a large adult audience. Many writers and literary critics considered it to be a turning point in young adult literature.
- It is the best-selling book series in literary history. Bloomsbury was the first to publish it in English, but its popularity demanded that it be translated into more than eighty languages to be sold worldwide.
Author
- Joanne Rowling was born in Yate on July 31, 1965. She was a British author known as J. K. Rowling.
- She earned a degree in French from the University of Exeter in 1987 and began working as a bilingual secretary.
- She wrote the entire Harry Potter series between 1997 and 2007, but she had the idea for its characters in 1990 while waiting for a delayed train.
- Her most famous work was the series, which sold over 500 million copies and earned her the title of the highest-paid author by Forbes in 2008.
Plot
- The Harry Potter series consisted of seven fantasy novels adapted into an eight-part film series by Warner Bros Pictures producing one film per novel except for the last novel, which was divided into two parts.

- A play titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts I and II that takes place nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows acts as a sequel to the books. Based on a brand-new original story by Thorne, Rowling, and John Tiffany, it was written by Jack Thorne.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
- Harry Potter lives under the stairs in the house of the Dursleys before discovering that he is born a wizard at eleven. A giant named Hagrid appears to invite him to Hogwarts, a British school for wizarding.
- As a new student at Hogwarts, his first school friends were Hermione, a quiet student perceived as a bookworm, and Ron, his goofy friend despite being a scaredy-cat.
- He discovers that his parents, whom he had lost when he was a baby, had been murdered by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. He is also targeted for death, but the curse returns to Voldemort. He survived the attack, but a scar on his forehead remained.
- He met Severus Snape, a potions master. Because Severus is a pure-blood Draco Malfoy, they are natural enemies.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- The students of Hogwarts are attacked by an unknown creature whose original target is wizards of Muggle descent. The attack resurrects a fifty-year-old school mystery, the Chamber of Secrets.
- He discovers a rare Dark Arts ability that allows him to speak Parseltongue, a snake language.
- When Hermione is attacked, he and Ron accidentally discover those secrets. They walk into the chamber. He finds that Ginny Weasley opened the chamber after being possessed by an old diary containing the memories of Voldemort’s younger self, who is called Tom Marvolo Riddle.
- The ancient monster unleashed by the old diary kills anyone who makes direct eye contact with it. From the sorting hat, he draws the Sword of Gryffindor, the house in which he was included. He defeats the monster and then destroys the diary.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Sirius Black, a fled convict, has set his sights on him. Black was suspected of assisting in his parents’ murder.
- When he struggles with his reaction to the dementors feeding him despair, he seeks the advice of professor Remus Lupin.
- He and Hermione follow Ron into the Shrieking Shack after being dragged by a black dog revealed to be Sirius Black. Lupin follows them, explaining that Black was James Potter’s best friend when Peter Pettigrew framed him.
- When the full moon rose, Lupin fled after transforming into a werewolf. They are chasing Lupin but are bounded by dementors.
- A mysterious figure wielding a Patronus stag appears to save them. The figure is his future self, who used the Time Turner to travel back in time.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- He reluctantly enters the Triwizard Tournament, where schools of witchcraft and wizardry are competing.
- In the tournament, he is accompanied by Cedric Diggory, which causes his friends to avoid him.
- Hogwarts won the Triwizard Cup, but it teleported him and Cedric to a graveyard, which happened to be a gathering place for Voldemort supporters.
- Alastor Moody, the Dark Arts professor, reveals himself to be a Death Eater known as Barty Crouch, Jr.
- He manages to flee, but Cedric is killed. The blood he shed during the fight is used to revive Voldemort.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
- The Ministry of Magic is sceptical of Voldemort’s return. Nonetheless, Dumbledore orders the reactivation of a secret society known as the Order of the Phoenix to combat Voldemort.
- The Ministry desires Dolores Umbridge to be the school’s High Inquisitor, and Umbridge declares an immediate ban on the Defense Against the Dark Arts.
- He teaches what Umbridge forbids in a secret group formed by Hermione and Ron called Dumbledore’s Army.
- His disobedience causes a punishment, and he dreams of a dark corridor in the Ministry of Magic.
- He dreams of Sirius being tortured, but it turns out that it is not a mere dream and not a vision. He immediately goes to the Ministry but ends up facing the Death Eaters.
- The Order of Phoenix saves him and his friends, but Sirius is killed.
- A prophecy about him and Voldemort is discovered, which states that one of them must die at the hands of the other.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- He comes across an old textbook that mentions the Half-Blood Prince. His success in Potion class is attributed to the book.
- He studies with Dumbledore and learns how to use a Pensieve, which allows him to see Voldemort’s early life.
- He discovers that potion master Horace Slughorn taught Tom Riddle and that Voldemort divided his soul and created a series of Horcruxes.
- He goes to a lake with Dumbledore to destroy a Horcrux, but this weakens Dumbledore.
- When they return to school, Draco Malfoy and the Death Eaters attack it.
- Professor Snape, the legendary Half-Blood Prince, murders Dumbledore.
- Dumbledore stated in his will that he was leaving Harry the Snitch contained in the resurrection stone. Harry first caught it during a Quidditch match at Hogwarts.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
- Voldemort takes over the Ministry of Magic.
- He and his two friends learn about the Deathly Hallows, which are legendary items that lead to the ability to control death.
- They break into the ministry and steal a Horcrux locket.
- When they arrived at Godric’s Hollow, Nagini attacked them.
- Patronus leads them to the Gryffindor Sword, which allows them to destroy the locket.
- He saw Snape’s memories before Voldemort killed Snape due to paranoid delusions. He discovers Snape was a Horcrux and was devoted to Dumbledore.
- He surrenders to Voldemort to save the Hogwart defenders and dies, but the Hogwarts defenders resist and resurrect him. He defeated Voldemort for the second time.
Nineteen Years Later
- The epilogue describes the lives of the characters who survive Voldemort’s attack and the aftermath of his death.
- He and Ginny are married with three children, while his two friends are married and have two children.
Legacy
- The series transformed children’s literature, which was generally realistic in the 1970s.
- In the first four years after its release, it accounted for 28% of the revenue in the children’s market.
- Older fantasy works, such as Diana Wynne Jones’ Chrestomanci series and Diane Duane’s Young Wizards, were reprinted as a result of Harry Potter fans’ interest in the genre.
