Mississippi is a state located in the Southern United States. The name of the state derives from the Mississippi River, which flows along its western boundary and comes from the Ojibwe word misi-ziibi. - The state of Mississippi is bordered by Tennessee (North), Alabama (East), Louisiana (South) and across the Mississippi River, by Louisiana and Arkansas (West). Major waterways such as Big Black, Mississippi, Pascagoula, Yazoo, and Pearl River surround the territory with the total land area of 48,430 sq. miles.
- Hernando de Soto first explored the Mississippi River in 1540 under the Spanish flag. In 1699, Sieur d’Iberville a French colonist made the first permanent settlement near present-day Ocean Springs along the gulf.
- By 18th century, the territory was ruled by Spanish, French, and British colonial governments. They traded African slaves as laborers. The class of free colored people was established under the French and British government, who are multiracial descendants of European men and enslaved women, and their children.
- After the war, freedmen refused to attend white-run churches instead, they set up independent congregations. Dominantly, the African-American people left the Southern Baptist Church, diminishing its members. In 1805, the National Baptist Convention of black churches was established.
- On December 10, 1817, it was the 20th state admitted to the Union with David Holmes as the state’s first governor. During the Civil War, it became one of the founding member of the Confederate States.
- Throughout the history of Mississippi, the demographics of African-American people grew heavily due to great migration. Today, the economy of the state is supported by the production of cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, chickens, raising catfish, and dairy products. With hot, humid subtropical climate having long summers and short mild winters.
- Some of its most famous citizen are Jim Henson (puppeteer), Oprah Winfrey (talk show host), Morgan Freeman (actor), James Earl Jones (actor), William Faulkner (author), Elvis Presley (entertainer), Tennessee Williams (playwright), and Walton Payton (football player).
