PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
- Bullfrogs are large species categorized under the Ranidae family and the largest “true frog” living in North America. It grows up to 8 inches and weighs up to 3.3 pounds. Females are usually larger than males.
- Their skin varies in different spectrums of green, olive, or brown, with dark brown, dark green, or black patches and a yellow or white underbelly.
- An adult bullfrog’s skeleton is made up of bone, hyaline cartilage, and calcified cartilage which can be found throughout its body, but is specifically more prominent in the rounded ends of the long bones in the limbs and shoulder-girdle. The radius and ulna are joined together into a single bone, the radio-ulna, and the tibia and fibula are merged into a single bone called the tibio-fibula.
- This amphibian has ten bones; nine are true vertebrae, and the remaining bone is a rod-shaped urostyle that is almost as long as the other nine.
- The head of the bullfrog is flat but its shape relies on the thorough division of the jaw bones; the orbital cavities and and the horizontal direction of their floor also affects the form of its head.
- Its central nervous system is composed of the spinal cord and the brain, while its peripheral nervous system is made up of the cranial and spinal nerves.
- Bullfrogs have four legs, not two hands and two legs. Their front and rear feet are both webbed, and their hind limbs are long and slender. Moreover, these amphibians have large heels.
- For better breathing, these frogs use their skin, buccal cavity, and lungs; their cutaneous (“skin”) gas exchange is a notable feature for all amphibians.
- The tympanum, a large external oval-shaped membrane composed of nonglandular skin, is relatively prominent in males, where it is larger than the eye. Male bullfrogs also possess nuptial pads and one internal vocal sacs, and their throats turn yellow during breeding season.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
- Bullfrogs are found in North America east of the Rockies, across Nova Scotia in southern Canada to central Florida and from the west to the east coast of Wisconsin to the Great Plains.
- These frogs have been brought to western North America, Central and South America, islands in the Caribbean, China, Japan, Thailand, other European countries, and a number of oceanic islands.
- Bullfrogs survive in water. They inhabit other ecosystems such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and bogs, but they prefer larger bodies of water than other frogs, especially waters that are warm, still, and shallow.
- They delve into the mud to hibernate in the cold winter weather.
