Key Facts & Information
ETYMOLOGY
- The term βfaunβ is derived from the Latin word βFaunusβ, a God in Roman mythology from the 2nd century BCE, and is related to the Greek God, Pan. Faunus is the God of the countryside, specifically the forests, fields, and plains. Faunus is believed to be a faun, hence the relation between the name of the two terms.
- Fauns are mythological creatures that are half-goat, half-human. They are often mistaken for satyrs, whose body is similar to that of a faun, having goat and human parts. However, the two creatures are different.
Background
- Fauns first appeared in Roman mythology and were associated with Greek mythologyβs βPanesβ creature, but they were later proved to be different from each other in terms of physicality and personality. Fauns live in the forest, where they are known to guide travelers if they like them.
Characteristics
- Fauns are well-known for instilling fear in lonely men who wander in remote places or the forest. They have a great sense of direction, allowing them to be a guide in the woods. Because of these characteristics, fauns either guide the traveler or scare them.
- Despite their reputation for being fond of women, fauns are not as womanizing as satyrs. They are more known for being foolish.
- Fauns are naturally fond of the woods as they inhabit the forests and look after them. Their love for music shows through their passion for dance and playing the flute, making them active guests at a party.
- People they encounter describe fauns as generally charming creatures that happily stroll around the woods. They are also said to be gentle and attractive. Fauns often join Pan in his merrymaking activities. They serve as Panβs servants, especially whenever Pan needs their aid. As a result of their loyalty and service, Pan gifted the fauns his symbolic instrument, a flute made of wood.
Physical Features
- Fauns are mythological creatures with half-goat, half-human proportions, and belong to a chimeric race. They may sound peculiar because of their unusual body, but they are very charming according to the people they encounter. Fauns are known to have goat features below their waist, but not all fauns are like this, as some possess human feet instead of the hooves of a goat.
Special Abilities
- Fauns are cheerful creatures. They have the special ability of making others have a cheerful and happy heart. They are known for using wooden flutes to produce extraordinary melodies that can hypnotize others. No one can resist a faun when they play their flute, which is why they sometimes use this ability to lure travelers into the forest, where they get lost. Capturing beautiful maidensβ heart is also one of the special abilities of fauns when they play their flute.
- Fauns may also interrupt people when traveling. Due to their joyful attitude, they like to lure travelers by using their dancing abilities, making jokes, and preparing delicious foods that make it hard for travelers to resist their charm, making them stay.
Satyrs
- Satyrs are creatures often mistaken for fauns. They both possess goat and human body parts; however, Satyrs have a horseβs tail and ears, making them different from fauns.
- Satyrs are followers of Dionysus, the God of Wine. They are also known for their extreme womanizing attitudes and are described as wild, being the symbol of the dangers when something is left unrestrained.
Greek and Roman Mythology
- Greek and Roman Mythology have significant similarities but differences as well. First, Greek mythology existed more than 1,000 years earlier than Roman mythology. The naming of Greek gods and goddesses was also based on human characteristics and traits. On the other hand, the naming of Roman deities was based on objects, so they did not possess genders. Despite this, every Greek god and goddess has a counterpart in Roman mythology.
Faunus
- Faunus is the Roman God associated with fauns. He is known for bestowing fruitfulness on the flocks and fields, which is the main reason why he is worshipped in the countryside. Faunus is the god of the fields, forests, and plains.
Pan
- Pan is the Greek god associated with fauns. He is the god of the mountain wilds, fertility, shepherds, rustic music, and the meadowlands. Pan is known as the god of fertility due to his frequent affiliation with sexual aspects. Pan is known to give forest.
Fauns in Popular Culture
- Despite their long existence, the overall description of fauns has changed very little. They still possess human characteristics above and goat characteristics below their waist. They are still fond of and connected with the forest. They are also either a great help or hindrance to travelers. The most well-known faun in the modern period is Mr. Tumnus, the faun in the film series βThe Chronicles of Narniaβ, adapted from a book by British author C.S. Lewis.
- Fauns were one of the first races when Narnia was built. They are characterized as more civil than satyrs and love to dance around the bonfire at night playing their flute, but occasionally they play drums and lutes as well. Fauns are generally loyal to the Kings and Queens of Narnia, including Aslan. They are described as hospitable, friendly, and welcoming creatures that would invite you to their cozy and warm homes for tea and cake. However, some fauns are cunning and dishonest because they are spies for the White Witch, possibly because of fear.
- Fauns are not warlike creatures but when duty calls, they will arm themselves and fight for Narnia. The Narnian imperial army consists mostly of fauns and satyrs, fighting using long spears with slightly curved blades and one-handed swords. They also use broad four-cornered or oval-shaped shields for defense. Though fauns are not the strongest warriors, they are highly capable soldiers.
- Their strong goat legs allow them to be light and swift on their feet when they move; they can do acrobatic leaps, spins, and flips to give enemies strong kicks on their heads and stomachs. Fauns are also great at archery.
- Mr. Tumnus is a well-known faun character in the movie. He was a servant of the White Witch and has the duty to bring to the White Witch any human that comes to Narnia to prevent the prophecy. The prophecy states that the Golden Age will come to Narnia when Aslan returns with the two daughters of Eve and two sons of Adam, which means the fall of the White Witch as well. Mr. Tumnus was supposed to lure Lucy, the first human to enter Narnia, to the White Witch but was stopped by his conscience. When the White Witch learned about this, she ordered the secret police to capture Mr. Tumnus and locked him in the dungeon where she turned him into a stone statue.
