- Becoming a nurse requires passion and hardwork. But fret not! If you have passion, you will become a nurse in the future.
- Earn an accredited degree. Depending on your country, nursing degrees have different degree titles, for example:
- UK – You get to decide what field of nursing you are interested in: Adult Nursing, Children Nursing, etc.
- US – Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), etc.
- Australia – Bachelor in Nursing (BSN)
- Internship – Internship happens midway the Nursing course. This gives way for nursing students to experience their course in a professional setting.
- Pass licensure exam – Most countries require national licensure exams in order for nurses to have professional license and credibility to practice the profession. In the United States, nursing students must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in order to practice.
- Oath-taking – Ceremonial practice for new nurses where they take an oath to practice their profession.
- Finishing Master’s Degree – Some nurses take a masters degree to boost their portfolio and have better chance for promotions.

- Recording details and symptoms of the patient’s medical history and current health status, including vital signs.
- Administering doctor-prescribed medications and treatments, then monitoring patients for side effects and reactions.
- Preparing patients for exams, surgeries, or treatments then providing post-surgical care.
- Performing wound care, such as sanitizing and bandaging them.
- Performing pre-lab work procedures including drawing blood, urine samples, and other body fluids.
- Interacting with patients while educating them and family members on treatment and care plans, as well as answering their questions.
- Assisting in medical procedures as needed – usually surgeries.
- They coordinate care with other health care providers and specialists to provide the best medical services to their patients.
- Supervising and training licensed practical and vocational nurses, nursing assistants, and nursing students.

- Nurses also have specialties like doctors. This way, they can focus on what they can do best for their patients. Listed below are common types of nurses around the world.
- Certified Nursing Assistant – They bathe and dress patients and assist with their repositioning and walking.
- Nurse Anesthetist – They usually assist with medical procedures, specifically with an anesthetic.
- Surgical Assistant Registered Nurse – Assist surgeons during surgeries and care for patients before, during, and after surgery.

- The nursing profession began as early as 300 CE, during the height of the Roman empire.
- Roman hospitals employed nurses, called “hypourgoi,” who assisted in in-patient medical care.
- By the entry of the middle ages, advancements and innovations were implemented. Nurses served a myriad of duties such as housing lepers and refugees and looking after sick and injured patients.
- During that time, nurses were usually consisting of nuns and even monks.
- Soon, many countries around Europe and the rest of the world began to employ nurses as hospitals expanded.
- Health care facilities were usually built and supported by churches and monasteries.
- The profession of nursing however became modernized thanks to the social reformer and statistician, Florence Nightingale, who founded modern nursing.
- Her experiences as a nurse during the Crimean War influenced her views about sanitation.
- She also founded the St. Thomas Hospital and the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860.
- Other notable nurses include Clarissa Harlowe Barton who founded the American Red Cross.
- Linda Richards and Agnes Elizabeth Jones helped establish nursing schools throughout the U.S. and Japan later on.
- When World War I and World War II happened, nurses became one of the most sought-after professions. They served as principal caretakers of the wounded soldiers and civilians besides the war doctors.
