HISTORY OF CRICKET SPORT

  • Expert opinions say that cricket may have been invented during Saxon or Norman times by children living in the Weald, south-east England in the 13th Century.
  • The players propelled the stone (long before balls were used) at a tree stump or at the hurdle gate (wicket) into a pen. A crossbar (bail) rested on the slotted tops. Bats used were believed to be a shaped branch of a tree.
  • The first reference to cricket being played seriously as a sport was in 1611.
  • Semi-formal games were then recognized when first English “county teams” formed in mid 1600s. Local experts from village cricket were then employed as the earliest professionals.
  • By mid-18th century, cricket was already the most popular sport in London and the other counties of England. The field rules of cricket were then written in 1744 by the “Star and Garter Club” whose members founded the famous Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord’s in 1787.
  • Men and women played the sport throughout England which later found fame overseas in the 1800s. The first official international match was between Canada and United States in 1844.
  • With the influence W.G. Grace, the greatest cricketer in Victorian England, this sport brought light to the modern principles of batting.
  • Many English counties such as Leicestershire, Somerset, Hampshire, Durham, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Sussex, Northamptonshire, and Glamorgan dominated the sport in the following years.
  • The Imperial Cricket Conference, later International Cricket Council, would eventually govern over the responsibility for the administration of the game.
  • There are 12 World Cup tournaments being held till date. Australia is the most successful country with five World Cups.

BASIC RULES OF CRICKET

  • Cricket is played between two teams each made up of 11 players, comprising of at least one inning where each team take turns in batting and fielding/bowling.
  • The fielding team will have a bowler bowl the ball to the batsman who tries to hit the ball with their bat.
  • The fielding team tries to get the batsmen out by:
    • Hitting the wickets with the ball when bowling
    • Catching a batsman’s shot on the full
    • Hitting the batsman’s leg in front of the wicket (LBW)
    • Or hitting the wickets before the batsmen can run to the other end of the pitch.
  • The batsmen try to score as many runs as possible before getting out by:
    • Hitting the ball to the boundary along the ground is 4 runs.
    • Hitting the ball and running between the wickets and making it to the other end before the fielders can hit the wickets with the ball. Each time you run one full length of the pitch it equals 1 run.
    • Hitting the ball over the boundary on the full equals 6 runs.
    • The fielding team must get 10 batsmen out before they can change over and start batting.
  • The aim of the game is to score as many runs as possible before the fielding team takes 10 wickets. The team with the most runs wins.

RECOGNITION

  • Although soccer is England’s most popular sport, Cricket is the national game not by law but de facto.
  • Cricket is also the national sports of Jamaica, Barbados, Bermuda, Australia, and Antigua and Barbuda.
  • Some films dedicated to cricket are: Sachin: A Billion Dreams (India), Hansie (South Africa), Death of a Gentleman (England), The Night Watchmen (TV- Australia), etc.
  • Cricket is also the subject of works by English poets William Blake and Lord Byron.
