Key Facts & Information
HISTORY OF THE BOROKA LOOKOUT
- The sandstone ranges of the Grampians, where the Boroka Lookout is located, began to form about 430 million years ago as the result of deposits of sediment on the seafloor.
- Through the various geological processes – pressure, heat, folding, faulting, and erosion – features such as mountain ranges began to appear.
- The flora and fauna were also impacted by this geology.
- When Europeans colonized Australia, the Grampians were referred to as “Gariwerd”, which is derived from the Aboriginal Australian languages of the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung people who lived in the area.
- In 1836, Sir Thomas Mitchell, a Scottish surveyor and explorer who traveled around south-eastern Australia, renamed “Gariwerd” after the Grampian Mountains in Scotland.
- As would later be discovered, the Grampians region is home to the largest number of ancient Aboriginal rock art paintings and shelters in the whole of southern Australia.
- Over 80% of all rock art found in Victoria comes from this region.
- The cultural history of the Aboriginals who inhabited this land
dates back at least 22,000 years. - The rock art on the walls tells the story of their habitation of the lands
and their daily lives. - Since Sir Thomas Mitchell’s expedition in 1836, the area has seen a lot of change.
- Industries such as forestry, stone quarrying, gold mining, and water
harvesting have gone through significant changes. - Regional water supply was constructed within the Grampians for people who live in the area, including dams and pipelines to distribute fresh water.
THE BOROKA LOOKOUT TODAY
- Tourism began to establish its roots in the early 1900s.
- People began flocking to the area for its beautiful views of Halls Gap, Lake Bellfield, Fryans Valley, and the ranges of Mount William and Wonderland.
- Contrary to popular belief, the Boroka Lookout is simply a viewing platform from which to view all of the aforementioned sights.
- Many people confuse the lookout platform with the flat, protruding rock that forms a hanging cliff that can be seen to the right from the platform itself.
- The lookout offers tourists 360-degree views of Western Victoria.
- Below the lookout, visitors will notice lush vegetation leading down into the valley and nearby town.
- You can access the lookout at any time, but the sunrises and sunsets in particular have been touted as the best times to visit.
- The highest peak in the Grampians, which is visible from the Boroka Lookout, is Mount William, which stands at 3,828 feet and includes waterfalls (including Mackenzie Falls, which is another popular spot in the park) and other gorgeous lookouts.
- Visitors to the park may partake in a number of recreational activities (cycling, hiking, rock climbing, bouldering), water-based activities (fishing, swimming, and boating), or simply enjoying the sights with a leisurely walk.
- There are many opportunities for photography, as well.
