What to know about Mt. Kanchenjunga?
- It is part of the Himalayan range, with an elevation of 8,586 meters (28,169 feet).
- The word Kanchenjunga (interpreted in Sikkim) means “The Five Treasures of Snows”, in reference to its five peaks. These treasures would represent the five repositories of God, namely gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books.
- In the local Limbu language, the name Kanchenjunga is also called Sewalungma which means “Mountain that we offer greetings to”.
- The mountain is said to be an important place in the performance of religious rituals among local people. It is sacred in the Kirat religion.
- The composition of Mt. Kanchenjunga is mainly the rocks dated from the Neoproterozoic (late Precambrian) to Ordovician age (about 445 million to 1 billion years old). During summer monsoon season, the mountain and its glaciers receive heavy snow when compared to the winter season.
- In Sanskrit, Kanchenjunga was derived from the words kanchana (gold) and ganga (river that flows in the region), which means “the river shines like gold”.
- As mentioned, Kanchenjunga has five peaks. Three of which are located on the border of North Sikkim, India and Taplejung District, Nepal. The other two peaks are in Taplejung District.
- The World Wildlife Fund, along with the Nepal Government, runs the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project, which serves as the home of the Red Panda and other montage animals, birds, and plants.
- Before 1852, Mt. Kanchenjunga was considered to be the world’s highest mountain. However, in 1849, the British Great Trigonometric Society began its calculations. Based on this, it was concluded that Mount Everest was the highest, while Kanchenjunga was the third highest mountain in the world.
- Numerous expeditions were done in the attempt to climb Mt. Kanchenjunga. On May 25, 1955, Joe Brown and George Band first climbed the mountain as part of a British expedition. This expedition honored Sikkimese beliefs by stopping a few feet away from the actual summit. For the Sikkimese people, the summit is sacred. Because of this, mountain climbers who followed suit followed this tradition.
