- 1512 – The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo, is shown for the first time.
- 1520 – The Strait of Magellan is first navigated by Ferdinand Magellan
- 1604 – William Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Othello’ is presented for the first time
- 1700 – Charles II of Spain died and was succeeded by Philip V, resulting in the War of Spanish Succession.
- 1776 – Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in California. Each year, the swallows of Capistrano leave their nests there around St. John’s Day (October 23rd) and return the following year near St. Joseph’s Day (March 19th).
- 1800 – John Adams becomes the first US President to live in the Executive Mansion (later renamed the White House).
- 1848 – The first medical school for women opened in Boston. The Boston Female Medical School was founded by Samuel Gregory with just twelve students. In 1874, the school merged with the Boston University School of Medicine, becoming one of the first co-ed medical schools.
- 1894 – Nicholas II became Tsar of Russia. The last Tsar of Russia took over the reign of the empire after his father, Alexander III died. Nicholas was forced to abdicate in 1917 and was executed a year later along with his family.
- 1911 – First bomb dropped from an aircraft. Prior to this, bombs were dropped using unmanned balloons. The first bomb launched from an aircraft was used by the Italians in the Italo-Turkish War.
- 1936 – The Rome-Berlin Axis was proclaimed by Italian Dictator Benito Mussolini following a visit to Berlin by Italian Foreign Secretary Ciano.
- 1950 – President Harry S. Truman was the target of an unsuccessful assassination attempt by two members of a Puerto Rican nationalist movement.
- 1952 – First large hydrogen bomb tested by the U.S.. The bomb, codenamed Mike, was part of Operation Ivy and was tested in the Eniwetok atoll in the Marshall Islands.
- 1955 – United Airlines Flight 629 blows up over Colorado. A bomb hidden in checked luggage of United Airlines Flight 629 exploded over Longmont, Colorado killing all 44 people on board.
- 1959 – After being struck in the face with a puck, hockey goalkeeper Jacques Plante wears a protective mask for the first time in professional play.
- 1963 – South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu were killed in a military coup.
- 1968 – The movie ratings system is first implemented by Hollywood.
- 1993 – The European Union came into existence as a result of the Maastricht Treaty.
- 1995 – The first all-race local government elections took place in South Africa, marking the end of the apartheid system.
