The human body has a total of about 300 bones at birth and 206 in a mature adult. Skeletons are associated with death which makes them a commercialized spooky figure during Halloween.

- In the field of science, osteology is the study of the structure and function of the skeletal system. The spinal column has a total of 26 bones while the ribs hold 24 bones. Arms and legs combined have a total of 120 bones. The cranium and mandible are the main bones in the skull. In addition to this, 6 bones form the ears, contributing to a total of 29 bones in a human head.
- In 1538, artist Hans Holbein the Younger gave the grim reaper the appearance of a cloaked skeleton. Since then, skeletons have been depicted as creatures of death.
- During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the gothic era of literature portrayed skeletons as a spooky element in the closet.
- In 1883, Eliot Ralston published The Specter Over Borstein Manor which was a book that narrated the creepy story of skeletal ghosts scaring children in an orphanage.
- Skeletons then featured in the films The Screaming Skull (1958), Haunted Hill (1959) and Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).
- During Halloween, skeletons as decorations are third most popular next to witches and Jack O’Lanterns. Life sized plastic skeletons are used as Halloween props while rubber and plastic skull masks have also become a hit.
- In Brittany, the place of bones is a tomb that houses the remains of long departed relatives. On Souls Day, people go to cemeteries and pray for the souls of their ancestors.
- In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated in a colorful way. Skeletons are once again used as Halloween decorations and are painted in bright colors and dressed like barbie dolls.
