The Huns were warriors who spent their time aimlessly going, from one place to another. They were known to be skilled horsemen which might have caused them to gain a reputation of being cruel and unconquerable as they journeyed through the European continent.

Key Facts & Information
THE ORIGIN
- There is no recorded history of the birth of the Huns, so historians and scholars have to rely on myths and stories based on their history and origins.
- Some scholars believed that the Huns were formed in 318 BC from the nomad Xiongnu people. It was also speculated that the Great Wall of China was built to protect China from them.
- Some historians believe that they were a group of people from Kazakhstan, while other historians say that the Huns came from somewhere in Asia but could not exactly pinpoint where.
- The Huns were said to have no known individual leader.
- Instead, they were led by their so-called “chieftains” as they traveled in small groups.
- Around 370 AD, the Huns were able to reach southeastern Europe, where they dominated one territory, and this activity of invasion continued for 70 years.
WAY OF BATTLE
- The Huns mastered horsemanship as early as the age of three, to the point where they could even sleep on horseback.
- One common myth states that their faces were slashed with a blade at an early age to train them to withstand pain.
- Most of the Hun troops dressed plainly but extensively, and their steeds had saddles and stirrups adorned with gold, silver, and valuable stones.
- They raised cattle but were not farmers, and they hardly ever resided in one area.
- They lived off the ground as hunter-gatherers, feeding on wild game and harvesting roots and herbs.
- The Huns were known for their peculiar approach to warfare.
- They marched rapidly and quickly to the front lines and fought in seeming disarray, which frightened their opponents and kept them on the run.
- The Huns were also skilled archers who used reflex bows crafted from birch, bone and glue.
- They could hit a man 80 yards away with their arrows and rarely missed their mark.
- However, the key weapon of the Huns was terror. It has been recorded that the Huns would put binders on their children’s heads, eventually deforming their skulls and giving them a threatening look.
- The Huns killed all men, women, and children and destroyed everything in their path. They captured and plundered and rarely took prisoners, but when they did, the prisoners were enslaved.
HISTORY IN THE BATTLE FIELD
- The Huns returned to the historical scene in Europe in 370 AD when they traveled the Volga River and defeated the Alans.
- In 372 AD, the Ostrogoths, an eastern tribe of Germanic Goths who troubled the Roman Empire by invading their territory, were attacked by the Huns.
- In 376 AD, the Huns invaded the Visigoths and compelled them to hole up within the Roman Empire.
- Roman domains were started to be conquered by 395 AD.
- Many Roman Christians claimed that these demons had come from hell.
- By 430 AD, the Hun clans were unified and governed by King Rugila and his brother, Octar.
- But by 432 AD, Octar was killed in battle, and Rugila ruled alone.
- In the 5th century, the Huns shifted from a community of nomadic fighting tribes to a more stable society residing on the Great Hungarian Plain within Eastern Europe.
THE MOST NOTABLE HUN
- The most well-known Hun is Attila, who was identified as a small man with a wide head and a slim beard. He understood both Latin and Goth and was a deal maker.
- When Attila began to govern the Huns, he began signing pacts of peace with different empires.
- Attila did not die the death of a warrior. He was discovered unconscious and choking on his own blood while in a drunken state on his wedding night.
