WRITING STYLES

- Style is the term used to describe a writerβs way of writing and telling a story.
- An effective writing style can also be determined by its readability and elegance.
- The ideas must be conveyed clearly despite the different play of words that keep the readers interested.
- Two elements of writing style are voice and tone.
- The point of view or personality shown in your writing is called the voice, while the attitude reflected in the writing pieces is called tone.
- The way words are used, the grammar and the sentence structure help create the tone of the writing piece.
FOUR MAIN TYPES OF WRITING STYLES
NARRATIVE
- This type of writing style is focused on storytelling.
- It often has storytelling elements such as main characters, emotion, plot, conflict, and setting.
- The earliest way of sharing narratives was through oral storytelling.
- It is usually the writing style used in fiction writing and creative writing.
- It can also be used in non-fiction writing as long as it has the elements of storytelling.
- The most common types of narrative are descriptive, historical, viewpoint, linear, and non-linear narratives.
- Some literature forms that use narrative are novels, short stories, feature stories, speeches, screenplays, journals, poetry, biography, autobiography, memoirs, and creative essays.
- Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe are some examples of literature that used the narrative style.
- For example:
Adventure Before Going To School
I woke up early and got ready for school. On my way, I found a wallet dropped on the street. I looked around to see if anyone around had it dropped, but there was no one. It was still early, so I decided to pick it up and bring it to the police station. After arriving, I saw that the station was busy, and I had to wait a few hours for my turn. I was getting nervous because it was almost time for my first class, and I needed to rush! The school is near the station, but I only have thirty minutes left before the school gate closes. I was already getting anxious. Ten minutes after, the owner of the wallet showed up at the station. Twenty minutes left, but if I run, I will be late. I have to think of the fastest route. Fortunately, the owner of the wallet offered me a ride. I did not hesitate and accepted his offer! I came to school with five minutes left on the clock! Today was tiring, but I had a lot of fun!
EXPOSITORY
- This writing style states facts and focuses on educating the readers rather than keeping them entertained.
- Expository writing involves thorough research and investigations, which are backed up by pieces of evidence.
- Textbooks, academic essays, news articles, business writing, scientific reports, and technical writing are examples that use an expository style of writing.
- It is objective, and its purpose is clearly delivered.
- Usually, fact-based writing is said to be boring.
- However, skilled writers adapt techniques from the narrative and descriptive writing to make a more impactful and engaging output.
- For example:
PERSUASIVE
- The main goal of this writing style is to persuade its readers.
- Unlike the expository technique, persuasive writing can rely on logic, facts, and opinions.
- Opinions of the writer aim to convince the readers to shift their position or stand in agreement with the writer.
- The facts included should strongly support the writerβs opinions.
- The persuasive writing style is commonly used in speeches, advertising campaigns, recommendation letters, editorials, and cover letters.
- For example, one of clearest example of persuasive writing in history can be seen below.
DESCRIPTIVE
- Descriptions are essential in an individual’s life, especially for writers.
- The descriptive writing style uses imagery to create a picture in mind.
- It includes a detailed description of the person, place, or thing in the writer’s composition.
- Apart from the descriptions formed through the use of the five senses, sometimes the writer also uses simile and metaphor to express something inexpressible through physical descriptions.
- This writing style is usually present in poetry, song lyrics, memoirs, fictional novels, short stories, and plays.
- This technique trains the writers to engage their readers with what they are reading.
- For example, a poem written with a descriptive style of writing.
Midnight and Moonlight
by Kelly Roper
“Her hair as dark as midnight
Sleek and wavy, trailing down.
