Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to answer ‘how many?’ questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration. When given a number from 1-20, they will be able to count out that many objects.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching ‘How Many?’, remember the following in your lesson:
- Provide students with a bag, box, or bucket of objects and ask them to count out a certain number of objects. Then, extend the range to larger numbers.
- Ask students to match numerals with the number of items in the set they’ve counted.
- Concrete items should be used before pictorial representations.
- Watch out for students that can match a quantity with a numeral but cannot produce that number of objects given materials or are asked to draw a picture.
