LEARNING OBJECTIVE

  • At the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; and connect counting to cardinality.

A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER

  • When teaching numbers and quantity, remember the following in your lesson:
    • With rote counting mastered, students must find the number of objects in a set.
    • Begin with counting physical objects, then progress to pictures, and then connect the physical representations to the numeral.
    • Say the number names in the standard order first and explain that successive numbers are larger.
    • Demonstrate that the arrangement of objects or pictures does not change the number represented.

THEORY

  • While working through this pack, students must connect the physical objects (3 items) with the oral number and written word (three), and the numeral (3). Be sure to develop one-to-one correspondence as they begin with 1 and move on to higher numbers, and help them establish the correct order as they match them.
