A fact family is a set of addition, subtraction sentences which involve the same number. Fact families help us understand the relationship between numbers. By the help of fact families we can understand the link between addition and subtraction more logically.
See the fact file below for more information on the fact family or alternatively, you can download our 28-page Fact Family worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment. This worksheet is broken down by Beginner, intermediate and advanced meaning you can choose the complexity level for your student.
Key Facts & Information
Summary:
- A fact family is a set of addition, subtraction sentences which involve the same number.
Example : 2, 3, 5
2+3=5
3+2=5
5-2=3
5-3=2 - These families help us understand the relation between numbers.
- They help us understand addition and subtraction logically.
What is fact family?
- Fact family is a very fundamental concept taught to primary students.
- Suppose we have a set of numbers. A fact family is a set of addition and subtraction sentences or equations which involves these same numbers.
- Fact families help us understand the relationship between numbers. By the help of fact families we can understand the link between addition and subtraction more logically.
- If we have three numbers we can have a fact family explaining the relation between these numbers. This fact family will have two addition and two subtraction equations.
- It will be much easier to understand if we explain this with the help of an example.
- Suppose we have a set of the following three numbers:
8, 2, 10
- We can say that all these three numbers are from the same family.
- The larger number is formed by combining the smaller numbers.
- We will have four sentences to explains the relations between these three numbers. Two of these sentences are addition sentences and two of them are subtraction sentences.
- Here we can develop two addition equations for this set:
8 + 2 = 10
2 + 8 = 10
- So by adding 2 and 8 we get 10.
- We can also develop two subtraction equations for the same set:
10 – 2 = 8
10 – 8 = 2
- So we can develop four equations for these three numbers.
Importance of fact families
- Fact families are taught to children as a basic concept and are very important.
- They are not complicated and children can easily understand the concept.
- They help children understand mathematical facts easily.
- The can understand addition and subtraction logically and how these concepts are interlinked.
- This concept helps develop number sense.
- Children are able to understand how numbers are related to each other.
Example:
- For the following set of single digit numbers find the fact families:
2, 3, 5
5, 4, 9
1, 2, 3
- For the first set we can draw:
- For these three numbers we can develop four sentences. Two of them will be addition sentences and two of them will be subtraction sentences.
- The addition sentences are given below:
2 + 3 = 5
3 + 2 = 5
- The subtraction sentences are given below:
5 – 2 = 3
5 – 3 = 2
- For the second set we can draw:
- For these three numbers we can develop four sentences. Two of them will be addition sentences and two of them will be subtraction sentences.
- The addition sentences are given below:
4 + 5 = 9
5 + 4 = 9
- The subtraction sentences are given below:
9 – 5 = 4
9 – 4 = 5
- For the third set we can draw:
- For these three numbers we can develop four sentences. Two of them will be addition sentences and two of them will be subtraction sentences.
- The addition sentences are given below:
1 + 2 = 3
2 + 1 = 3
- The subtraction sentences are given below:
3 – 1 = 2
3 – 2 = 1
Example:
- For the following set of two digit numbers find the fact families:
10, 15, 25
12, 14, 26
20, 12, 32
- For the first set we can draw:
- For these three two digit numbers we can develop four sentences. Two of them will be addition sentences and two of them will be subtraction sentences.
- The addition sentences are given below:
15 + 10 = 25
10 + 15 = 25
- The subtraction sentences are given below:
25 – 10 = 15
25 – 15 = 10
- For the second set we can draw:
- For these three two digit numbers we can develop four sentences. Two of them will be addition sentences and two of them will be subtraction sentences.
- The addition sentences are given below:
12 + 14 = 26
14 + 12 = 26
- The subtraction sentences are given below:
26 – 14 = 12
26 – 12 = 14
- For the third set we can draw:
- For these three two digit numbers we can develop four sentences. Two of them will be addition sentences and two of them will be subtraction sentences.
- The addition sentences are given below:
12 + 20 = 32
20 + 12 = 32
- The subtraction sentences are given below:
32 – 12 = 20
32 – 20 = 12
