Your students have learned about basic shapes and even some composition and decomposition in kindergarten. Now it’s time for them to expand on their knowledge.
See the fact file below for more information on the Compose 2D Shapes or alternatively, you can download our 21-page Geometry: Compose 2D Shapes CCSS 1.G.2 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) to create a composite shape and compose new shapes from the composite shape.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching composition of 2D and 3D shapes, remember the following:
- This lesson is about developing the spatial sense and intuition about shapes to discover their relationships to one another.
- Use pattern blocks or attribute blocks and ask students to put together blocks to make a new shape.
- For 3D shapes, start with concrete materials before moving to printed images to get 3D experience.
THEORY:
- Your students have learned about basic shapes and even some composition and decomposition in kindergarten. Now it’s time for them to expand on their knowledge. They must understand that combining basic shapes can result in new shapes and that even basic shapes can be broken down into smaller shapes.
THEORY AT WORK
