Table of Contents
There are many shapes that can be found in the world. These shapes can be classified into two kinds: geometric and organic. Geometric shapes have uniform measurements and characteristics, while organic shapes are more often seen as the shapes that are irregular and that do not have certain uniform characteristics.
See the fact file below for more information on the recognizing shapes or alternatively, you can download our 29-page Geometry: Recognizing Shapes CCSS 2.G.1 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, the student will recognize geometric shapes by identifying certain geometric characteristics, such as the number of sides, and angles.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When recognizing shapes, take note of the following:
- Remind the student to count the sides.
- Remember that a circle does not have any sides.
- Memorize that penta means 5, hexa is 6, hepta is 7, octa is 8, nona is 9, deca is 10.
- Do not get confused with the quadrilateral family.
THEORY:
- There are many shapes that can be found in the world. These shapes can be classified into two kinds: geometric and organic.
- Geometric shapes have uniform measurements and characteristics, while organic shapes are more often seen as the shapes that are irregular and that do not have certain uniform characteristics.
- Circles, triangles, rectangles, and other polygons are geometric shapes.
- In recognizing geometric shapes, we can identify certain characteristics such as the number of sides, corners, angles, and other dimensions.
- The easiest method in recognizing shapes is counting the number of sides:
- A circle does not have any sides and corners.
- A triangle always has three sides.
- Shapes with 4 sides are called quadrilaterals.
- Shapes having five or more sides end with the suffix -gon.
- There are many quadrilaterals:
- A rectangle consists of four right angles and 2 pairs of parallel sides.
- A square is consists of four right angles and 4 equal lengths of sides.
- A rhombus is recognized to have 4 equal sides with 2 pairs of parallel sides.
- Therefore, a square is both a rectangle and a rhombus.
- Quadrilaterals having 2 pairs of parallel sides are called parallelograms.
- A trapezoid has only 1 pair of parallel sides.
- Shapes are generally called polygons. This guides us in identifying shapes with 5 or more sides by remembering the suffix -gon.
- Pentagon (5 sides), Hexagon (6 sides), Heptagon (7 sides), Octagon (8 sides), Nonagon (9 sides), Decagon (10 sides).
