Key Facts & Information
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to correctly name 7 3D shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. Students will understand that 3D shapes have length, depth, breadth, i.e., they occupy space.
A Note for the Teacher
When teaching students the names and properties of 3D shapes, try the following in your lesson:
- It’s important to use hands-on materials. These can be household objects or toys.
- Be sure to use the correct vocabulary and properties of each 3D shape.
- It can take one or two weeks to teach each 3D shape, so take things slowly.
Theory
Now that your student is familiar with the names and properties of 2D shapes, it’s time to introduce three-dimensional shapes and their properties. Students must understand that 3D shapes possess the qualities of length, breadth, and depth, i.e., that shapes are no longer “flat” but “solid.”
