An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees.
See the fact file below for more information on the angle values or alternatively, you can download our 26-page Measurement and Data: Angle Values CCSS 4.MD.5b worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to apply the knowledge learned of recognizing angles in circles in finding the value of angles in n degrees.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When understanding angle values, take note of the following:
- Remember that an angle is part of a circle.
- Remember that the angle, with measurement n, when subtracted from 360 degrees, will produce an angle with the value (360-n) degrees.
- Remind that a straight line has an angle of 180 degrees.
THEORY:
- An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees.
- Remember that circles are made up of angles that have a sum of 360. Therefore, we can understand that the values of angles can be derived from the value of a circle’s turn.
- Remember that the right angle is ¼ of a circle. Therefore, subtracting 90 degrees from 360 degrees produces 270 degrees. This is the same as ¾ of a circle.
- Consider ∠ ABC
- We can find its angle measurement because we can add the other angles first.
- ∠CBD + ∠DBA = 145 degrees + 95 degrees = 240 degrees.
- Therefore, 360 degrees – 240 degrees = ∠ABC
- ∠ABC = 120 degrees
- With this knowledge, we can conclude that angle values can be computed from the knowledge of a circle’s angle of 360 degrees.
