There are many more measurements that have different values depending on the unit label. With this, we can understand that measurements are related to each other using their unit systems. We can convert a meter into a centimeter because it is related to each other by multiplying 100 to a centimeter to be labeled as a meter.
See the fact file below for more information on the converting units or alternatively, you can download our 30-page Measurement and Data: Converting Units CCSS 4.MD.1 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units, including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, the student will be able to express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When converting units, take note of the following:
- Remind the student this requires multiplication or division.
- Unit systems have labels that make the value of the measurement bigger or smaller.
- Remember that converting measurement units does not mean converting from one type to another (not applicable from length into volume).

- For the metric system, we convert by multiples of 10.
- For the customary system, we convert by specific values.
- Basically, we convert by multiplying or dividing values.
- With these operations, the units are also canceled and replaced.
