Since angles are measurements of a turn, they can be measured using an appropriate measuring device. That measuring device is called the protractor.
See the fact file below for more information on the measuring angles or alternatively, you can download our 28-page Measurement and Data: Measuring Angles CCSS 4.MD.6 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to learn how to use a protractor to measure an angle in degrees.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When understanding measuring angles, take note of the following:
- Remember to check if your measuring device is not broken or damaged.
- Find the vertex first, and then, place the center of the protractor on the vertex.
- Remind the student to double-check the measurement.
THEORY:
- Since angles are measurements of a turn, they can be measured using an appropriate measuring device. That measuring device is called the protractor.
- To use a protractor:
- Place the vertex of the angle at the center of the protractor.
- Turn the protractor or angle to place one of the rays on the 0 mark of the protractor.
- Read the mark wherein the other ray of the angle is placed, and that is the measurement of the angle.
- Remember that it is better to always place a ray on the 0 mark to avoid wrong measurements and further confusion. Also, using a protractor takes in mind that angles are measured through a turn.
- Also, take note that the higher the degree of the measurement of the angle, the more open it is seen.
