The idea of doing this is to get students to use the mathematical vocabulary of longest and shortest, along with explaining that they need to line the objects up so that they start at the same point.
See the fact file below for more information on the Ordering the Length or alternatively, you can download our 21-page Measurement and Data: Ordering the Length CCSS 1.MD.1 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to order three objects by length using the terms shortest and longest.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching ordering three objects by length, keep the following in mind:
- This learning standard for measurement involves comparing objects with the same attribute.
- Encourage students to look at two objects at a time (transitive principle) in order to successfully compare three or more objects.
- The transitivity principle states, for example, if A > B, and B > C, then A > C. By using this logic, and the statements are true, then it’s not necessary to measure A and C.
THEORY:
- The idea of doing this is to get students to use the mathematical vocabulary of longest and shortest, along with explaining that they need to line the objects up so that they start at the same point.
EXAMPLE:
- Using three objects of different lengths, compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using the third object. Students must use the words, longest & shortest, or longer & shorter when comparing the two objects.
