Perimeter is the length of all the sides of a figure. Whether the figure is a triangle, rectangle, square, hexagon, or even irregular figures, finding its perimeter is as simple as adding all its sides together.
See the fact file below for more information on the perimeter or alternatively, you can download our 26-page Measurement and Data: Perimeter CCSS 3.MD.8 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to find the perimeter of polygons. The student will also be able to find missing side lengths when a perimeter is given. The student will also be able to compare figures and determine whether they have the same area and different perimeters or the same perimeters with different areas.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching perimeter, take note of the following:
- Make sure the student doesnβt confuse the area with the perimeter.
- Guide the student in systematically adding all the sides of the figure.
- Have the student make sure they didnβt add the same side twice.
THEORY
- Perimeter is the length of all the sides of a figure. Whether the figure is a triangle, rectangle, square, hexagon, or even irregular figures, finding its perimeter is as simple as adding all its sides together.
- Letβs take, for example, the rectangle below. It has a length of 5 m and a width of 3 m. We also know that the other sides have a length of 5 m and a width of 3 m.
- To get the area of this rectangle, all we have to do is add the lengths of all its sides.
- So that would be: 5 + 5 + 3 + 3 = 16 m
- Even for irregular figures like the one below, finding the perimeter is just as simple.
