Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching telling time, keep in mind the following:
- Get your students interested by reading a story related to telling the time. (Itβs About Time, What time is it, Mr. Crocodile?)
- Remind them of the elements of the clock. Using different colors for the hands and dividing the clock into halves or quarters may help them remember
THEORY:
- The three basic concepts of telling time are essential in understanding when learning how to read clocks.
- First, there are 60 minutes in one hour.
- Second, the shorter hand shows the hour, and there are 12 hours on an analog clock face.
- Third, the long hand shows the minutes. Note that the minutes are counted by 5s around the face.
- The analog clock has 12 numbers all around the face. These numbers represent the hours. There are also 60 lines around the clock.
- These represent the minutes.
- When reading digital clocks, the number/s on the left signifies the hour, while those on the right show the minutes.
- For example, it is 1:00 (One oβclock)
- We say βoβclockβ to represent the beginning of the hour when the minute hand faces straight up towards 12.
- The hour hand is facing right by the hour, which means the hour has just begun.
- To show the half-hour, the minute hand faces halfway around the clock, which is at 6.
- This shows that the time is 1:30
- The minute hand is facing the 30-minute mark. As you can see, the hour hand is a little past 1. This means that 30 minutes have already passed.
- The 6th number when counting by 5s is the 30-minute mark.
- The number on the left is 1, and the number on the right is 30.
- That means that it is 1:30 (One Thirty)
