Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Liquid Volume is the amount of space a liquid takes up. We will use the metric system for measuring (gm, kg, ml, and L).
See the fact file below for more information on the Volume and Mass or alternatively, you can download our 23 page Measurement and Data: Volume and Mass CCSS 3.MD.2 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). They will be able to add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching Volume and Mass, try the following in your lesson:
- Create an understanding between the difference between mass and volume.
- Use the metric system for measuring that is grams/kilograms, milliliters/liters.
- Best to use a scale to show the learner mass and a measuring cup or beaker to show the learner volume.
THEORY
- Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
- Liquid Volume is the amount of space a liquid takes up. We will use the metric system for measuring (gm, kg, ml, and L)
- MASS:
- We measure mass in grams(gm) and kilograms(kg). When objects are small, we can use grams and, as the object gets bigger, we can use kg. To help visualize, a paper clip is about 1 g, and about 6 oranges are around 1 kg.
- 1000 g = 1 kg
- We can use different scales to measure mass:
- VOLUME:
- We measure volume in milliliters (ml) and liters (l). When there is a little liquid, we use milliliters; as the volume increases, we can use liters. Think about a teaspoon of water. It is about 5 ml, and a large soda bottle is 2 L.
- 1000 ml = 1 L
