To review, measuring the length of an object means identifying how long something is using a measuring device such as a ruler. In addition, lengths can be measured in different units. We all know that the two standard systems of measurement are the metric system and the customary system.
See the fact file below for more information on the length in different units or alternatively, you can download our 26-page Measurement & Data: Length in Different Units CCSS 2.MD.2 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, the student will understand that measuring an object can be labeled with different units. The student will know that different measurements having different values and units can still describe the same size.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When measuring length in different units, take note of the following:
- Remember that the dimension of the object does not change.
- Double-check what unit you are using to measure the object.
- Remind the student how to properly use a ruler.
- Remember that smaller units are needed than larger units to cover the same size.
THEORY
- To review, measuring the length of an object means identifying how long something is using a measuring device such as a ruler.
- In addition, lengths can be measured in different units. We all know that the two standard systems of measurement are the metric system and the customary system. A ruler usually measures length in centimeters or inches.
- Measuring the same object with two different units will produce various values of lengths. The value of the length depends on the unit used.
- The smaller units of measurement mean, the more youβll need to measure:
- A millimeter (mm) is smaller than a centimeter (mm):
- There are 10 mm in 1 cm.
- A centimeter (cm) is smaller than a meter (m):
- There is 100 cm in 1 m.
- A meter (m) is smaller than a kilometer (km):
- There are 1000 m in 1 km.
- An inch (in) is smaller than a foot (ft):
- There are 12 inches in 1 foot.
- A foot (ft) is smaller than a yard (yd):
- There are 3 feet in 1 yard.
- A yard (yd) is smaller than a mile (mi):
- There are approximately 2025 yards in 1 mile.
- A millimeter (mm) is smaller than a centimeter (mm):
- Consider this paper clip:
- The paper clip is 2 cm long but is also 20 mm long.
- The size of the object being measured does not ever change but the value varies depending on the unit used.
