Volume tells us how much space a 3D object occupies. We can measure this using cubes, or what we also refer to as cubic units
See the fact file below for more information on the Measurements and Data Intro to Volume or alternatively, you can download our 27-page Measurements and Data Intro to Volume CCSS 5.MD.3 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When measuring volume using cubic units, take note of the following:
- Always double check if your counting is correct since most students are prone to carelessness in counting
- Think 3-dimensionally: always try to visualize how the object would look like in front of you
THEORY:
- Recall that in previous math topics, the area is considered as a 2-dimensional value that is measured by the length times the width. In this module, we recognize that volume is a 3-dimensional value that is measured by the: length x width x height.
- Volume tells us how much space a 3D object occupies. We can measure this using cubes, or what we also refer to as cubic units. Each cube has a side 1 unit long, and if we multiply the length, width, and height together, we get: l x w x h = 1 unit x 1 unit x 1 unit = 1 unit cubed or 1 unitΒ³.
- By counting the number of cubic units in a given object, we can measure its total volume. For example, in the figure below, the 3 cubes present indicates that the volume of the object is 3 cubic units.
