By now, we have an idea of how to solve problems involving multiplication and division. We also have an idea about the relationship of multiplication and division, and their properties. In this lesson, we aim to be able to multiply and divide within 100 with ease, and to memorize all products of two one-digit numbers.
See the fact file below for more information on the multiply and divide within 100 or alternatively, you can download our 30-page Multiply and Divide within 100 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION
- Let’s have a recap. We already know that division is just an unknown-factor problem.
- How?
- 30 ÷ 6 = 5
- We can express this division equation as a multiplication equation.
- 5 x 6 = 30
- Note that the quotient is a factor of the multiplication equation. Thus, we call “finding the quotient” an “unknown-factor” multiplication problem.
- Therefore, if you know the division equation, you can easily know the multiplication equation.
- For example, what is 60 ÷ 5?
- 60 ÷ 5 = ?
- We know that to get 60, we need to multiply 5 and 12. Therefore, the answer is 12.
- 60 ÷ 5 = 12
- We also have an understanding of the commutative property of multiplication.
- Therefore, we know that the factors 5 and 12 are interchangeable.
- Thus, we can also get the answer to the division equation presented below.
- 60 ÷ 12 = ?
- We know that to get 60, we need to multiply 12 and 5. In the equation above, the number 12 is already present. Therefore, we can already assume that the quotient we are looking for is 5.
- 60 ÷ 12 = 5
- Since we know that we can derive quotients from factors, we can also get products from division equations. How?
- 20 x 4 = ?
- We know that if we divide 80 into 4 equal parts, we will get 20, or if we divide 80 into 20 equal parts, we will get 4. Therefore, the answer for the equation above is 80.
- 20 x 4 = 80
MULTIPLY FAST
- By now, we already know the different properties of multiplication.
- We can use these properties to be able to multiply fast and with accuracy.
- First, we know the identity property of multiplication, that any number multiplied with 1 would have a product equal to the number itself.
- 50 x 1 = 50
- Second, we know of the zero identity property of multiplication, that any number multiplied with 0 would have a product equal to 0.
- 30 x 0 = 0
- Third, we can break down a large multiplication equation into smaller parts that are easier to solve.
- 13 x 7 = ?
- Now, we know that we can express 7 as 5 + 2.
- 13 x (5 + 2) = ?
- We also know of the distributive property of multiplication.
- (13 x5) + (13×2) = ?
- Since we have relatively smaller multiplication equations within the equation, we can now easily solve for them.
- 65 + 26 = ?
- Once we already have the addition equation, we can simply add the numbers.
- 65 + 26 = 91
DIVIDE FAST
- By now, we already have an idea of the different properties of division. We can use these properties to solve division equations faster.
- First, we know that any number divided by one (1) is equal to the number itself.
- 98 ÷ 1 = 98
- Second, we know that any number divided by itself is equal to 1.
- 75 ÷ 75 = 1
MULTIPLICATION TABLE
- One of the goals at the end of this lesson is to memorize all products of two one-digit numbers.
