Key Facts & Information
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
A Note for the Teacher
When adding up to four two-digit numbers, take note of the following:
- Decompose the addends into tens and ones
- Remember that adding means having a value that is greater than both addends
- Always start adding from the ones, then tens
- Repeat the process for the third and fourth addends
Theory
When adding numbers up to four two-digit numbers, we can simply decompose the addends and add by place values.
- Consider 56 + 21 + 18 + 44:
First, decompose 48 and 34 into place values.
56 = 5 tens + 6 ones = 50 + 6
21 = 2 tens + 1 ones = 20 + 1
18 = 1 tens + 8 ones = 10 + 8
44 = 4 tens + 4 ones = 40 + 4
- Next, add the place values.
5 tens + 2 tens + 1 tens + 4 tens = 50 + 20 + 10 + 40 = 120
6 ones + 1 ones + 8 ones + 4 ones = 6 + 1 + 8 + 4 = 19
- Then, decompose the two sums again into place values and add them.
100 + 20 + 10 + 9 = 139
- You can also solve it vertically:
