Key Facts & Information
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, the student will add within 1000 by understanding that in subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones, and ones.
A Note for the Teacher
When adding within 1000, take note of the following:
- You are dealing with up to three-digit addends
- Decompose the addends into hundreds, tens, and ones
- Remember that adding means having a value that is greater than all addends
- Vertically, always start adding from the ones, then tens, then hundreds
Theory
When adding numbers within 1000, we can simply decompose the addends and add by place values.
- Consider 327 + 256:
First, decompose 321 and 256 into place values.
321 = 3 hundreds + 2 tens + 7 ones = 300 + 20 + 7
256 = 2 hundreds + 5 tens + 6 ones = 200 + 50 + 6
- Next, add the place values.
3 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 500 = 300 + 200
2 tens + 5 tens = 70 = 20 + 50
7 ones + 6 ones = 13 = 7 + 6
- If the sum of any place becomes a two-digit, decompose again.
13 = 1 tens + 3 ones = 10 + 3
- Then, add by place values again and put them all together.
500 + 70 + 10 + 3 = 583
- You can also solve it vertically:
