Adding and subtracting fractions are some of the fundamental concepts when dealing with fractions and non-whole numbers. This section will show you the different cases and methods of adding and subtracting fractions.
See the fact file below for more information on the adding and subtracting fractions or alternatively, you can download our 29-page Numbers and Operations Fractions: Add and Subtract Fractions CCSS 5.NF.1 and 5.NF.2 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of this module, students will be able to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers); students will also be able to solve word problems using fraction models.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When adding or subtracting fractions, take note of the following:
- Always make sure that the fractions have the same denominators
- Sometimes it helps to convert mixed fractions to improper fractions first, but sometimes solving the problems can be easier if you retain the mixed fractions
- When dealing with word problems, try to draw/visualize the scenarios
THEORY:
- Adding and subtracting fractions are some of the fundamental concepts when dealing with fractions and non-whole numbers. This section will show you the different cases and methods of adding and subtracting fractions.
- In general, we can only add fractions with the SAME denominators. Given two fractions, we first have to convert them to like fractions, and after doing so, we simply add/subtract their numerators. For example, take Β½ + ΒΌ :
- We first convert Β½ to a fraction with the same denominator as ΒΌ.
- We then simply add the 2/4 to 1/4 by adding their numerators. We always simplify the resulting fraction into its lowest terms, but for this example, 3/4 is already in the lowest terms
- We can also solve the equation by using bar models:
- Notice that red lines in the 1/2 model indicate how we converted it into four segments to make it have the same denominator as the first fraction i.e., 1/4
- In the case that we are asked to add/subtract a mixed fraction and a proper fraction, simply add the fraction components to each other, and we retain the whole number of the mixed fraction. Take, for example:
- In the case that we are asked to add/subtract two mixed fractions, we add the fraction components to each other, while we add the whole number components to each other. Take, for example
- In the case that we are asked to add/subtract improper fractions, like in any case of adding fractions, we always make sure that the fractions have the SAME denominator. After which, we simply add the numerators, and if asked to, we convert the result into a mixed fraction. Take, for example:
- When dealing with word problems for adding and subtracting fractions, always try to draw/visualize the problem, and try to determine whether the required operation is addition or subtraction.
