- At the end of this module, students will be able to interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator; students will also be able to solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When treating fractions as a division of numbers, take note of the following:
- Determine which is your numerator and denominator
- Try to visualize the scenarios; it helps to draw out how the scenarios are supposed to look like
- Donβt forget to simplify your fractions into the lowest terms
THEORY:
- When dealing with fractions, we can interpret them as a division of whole numbers. Situations that deal with division can be interpreted using fractions. In this module, we look at different cases of writing fractions as a division of whole numbers.
- Case 1: Objects that are distributed to a group
- Say we want to distribute a number of a certain item to a group of b people. We can write this as a fraction; in particular, we can write it as a/b.
- Take, for example, 5 cakes distributed among 8 people:
- Case 2: Parts of a Whole
- Say we want to get a portion of a whole of b. Like in the first case, we can write this as a fraction; in particular, we can also write it as a/b.
- Take, for example; we take 5 pieces out of a pizza with 6 slices:
