Theory
Fractions are seen all around us. With this idea in mind, we can assume that fractions can be found in different situations of everyday experiences.
Solving word problems on fractions means:
- Understanding the situation and story first
- Identifying the fractions (and knowing their unit fractions)
- Knowing whether you add them together or subtract them from each other
- Doing the necessary decomposition of these fractions
- Solving the equations, simplifying the answer, and labeling your final answer
Consider this word problem:
Johnny has 2 3/4 pies. He wants to share 1 2/4 with his friend, Samantha. How many will be left for Johnny?
First, understand the story:
We know that Johnny wants to give a share of his pies to Samantha.
Then, identify the fractions:
The fractions involved are mixed numbers: 2 3/4 & 1 2/4
Next, know whether to add or subtract:
The question wants to ask how many will be left. This means something will be separated from another. Therefore, we will subtract from the pies.
After all the necessary comprehension, we solve:
Label your final answer:
Johnny will be left with 1 1/4 pie.
