Theory
To compare means to examine the differences between numbers to decide if it is greater than, smaller than, or equal to another quantity. By comparing, we can find a greater or smaller number. We use the symbols <,> and =.
A great way to teach greater than and less than is to use the alligators.
The alligator is very hungry and would like to eat the most/greater/bigger value. So if we look at numbers 7 and 2, we must decide which is the bigger number. At the bigger number, we put two dots. At the smaller number, we put one dot.
The alligator’s mouth is open at the bigger number, and we read this as
7 is greater than 2.
If we compare the numbers 43 and 100:
This will read 43 is less than 100.
