A Note for the Teacher
When teaching counting within 1000, try the following in your lesson:
- Practice with counting sets of objects, on number lines, or on hundreds charts.
- Sing counting songs.
Theory
Counting by Fives. You can count by five by adding five to the previous count. The numbers that you would count if you started with 0 and counted by fives would be: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100
Examples
Counting can occur in a variety of forms.
Counting can be verbal. This is speaking every number out loud (or mentally) to keep track of progress.
Counting can also be in the form of tally marks, making a mark for each number and then counting all of the marks when done tallying. This is useful when counting objects over time, such as the number of times something occurs during the course of a day.
Counting can also be in the form of finger counting, especially when counting small numbers. This is often used by children to facilitate counting and simple mathematical operations.
When we skip count by 5s, we look at every 5th number. We can use counters and count out loud, or we can use a numberline to help us.
