Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to fluently Subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value and properties of operations.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching Subtraction within 1 000, try the following in your lesson:
- Ensure that the learner understands place value
- Always start subtracting from the ones, then tens, and then hundreds place.
- If you are regrouping, always write the carried value in the correct place, ie., above the tens column or above the hundreds column.
THEORY
- Subtraction is the process of calculating the difference between two or more numbers or amounts.
- HOW TO SUBTRACT WHOLE NUMBERS:
- Write the numbers, so each place value lines up vertically.
- Subtract the digits in each place value. Work from right to left, starting with the oneβs place. If a digit in a place value is less than the one below it, carry over from the next place value.
- Continue subtracting each place value from right to left, subtracting each place value and carrying if needed. So we always start subtracting from the ones.
- Example: 132 – 8 – composing tens
- If we write it so that the place values line up, it will look as so:
- Example: 304 – 86 – composing hundreds
