LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching adding within 100, take note of the following:
- Itβs important for students to not simply guess based on facts
- Use concrete materials, models, drawings, and place value strategies to add within 100
- Ten frames, number lines, and even rounding can be used to build strategies for multi-digit addition within 100.
THEORY:
- Here, students need to draw on their understanding of base ten to successfully conduct addition within 100.
- If you provide a problem such as in the video in the warm-up activity, it is not efficient to count sequentially; indeed, one can even lose track and end up at the wrong total!
- The addition of multi-digit numbers becomes far more efficient and accurate when students recognize the place value of each digit and perform addition operations within each category.
- Letβs look at an example:
- 24 red apples and 8 green apples are on the table. How many apples are on the table in total?
- To solve this problem, a student can use a ten frame and place chips on each square.
- The student will place 24 chips on 3 ten frames, then an additional 8 chips to fill up the remaining ten frames. They will then notice there are 2 remaining chips. So, 30 + 2 = 32
- Moving away from ten frames, the principle of place values for tens and ones can be used to do column addition. Start by ensuring the numbers are correctly lined up in their place value, then conduct simple addition.
- Letβs look again:
- A student may prefer to break the problem down and use a number line:
- Using an understanding of number bonds and decomposing numbers, they can determine that 8 can be decomposed into 6 and 2. Therefore, 24 + 6 = 30
- Then, 30 + 2 = 32
