This lesson is about building the foundations for grade 1 numbers in base ten. In grade 1, students will learn about a “ten” as a group of ten and unitizing. Since this isn’t the focus in kindergarten, attention is rather given to working with numbers 11 to 19. Here, students can learn to create one group of 10 and then count the remaining to arrive at the total.
See the fact file below for more information on the composing and decomposing numbers or alternatively, you can download our 19-page Numbers and Operations in Base Ten: Composing and Decomposing Numbers CCSS K.NBT.1 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching composing and decomposing numbers 11 -19 into ten ones and further ones, try the following in your lesson:
- Use the number of objects to correlate with the number. This way, students recognize the quantity with a written digit.
- Teaching vocabulary is important at this stage. Students must be able to correctly associate a written number with the spoken word and its tangible amount.
THEORY
- This lesson is about building the foundations for grade 1 numbers in base ten. In grade 1, students will learn about a “ten” as a group of ten and unitizing. Since this isn’t the focus in kindergarten, attention is rather given to working with numbers 11 to 19. Here, students can learn to create one group of 10 and then count the remaining to arrive at the total.
- For example, they will have one group of 10 and then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 other objects. They must be able to keep track of their counting and groupings to be able to say here is 10, then 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. The total is 15 because there is one group of, and there are five other objects which make 15.
- Example:
- As this is a foundation, it’s essential to check a student’s thinking.
- As such, try the following in your discussions:
- Teacher: “I have some buttons here. Do you think they will fit on our ten frames? Why? Why Not? Use your ten frames to investigate.”
- Student A: “There are too many to fit on the ten frames. Only 10 will fit!”
- Teacher: “So you have some leftovers?”
- Student A: “Yes. I’ll put them over here next to the ten frames.
- Teacher: “How many do you have in all?”
- Student A: “One, two, three, four… ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. I have fourteen. Ten fits on the frame, and four didn’t.”
- Teacher: “Use your recording sheet to show what you found out!”
