LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • At the end of the lesson, students will be able to count to 120 by tens and by ones, count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence, and write numbers from 0 to 120.

A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:

  • When teaching counting to 120, keep the following in mind:
    • Remind your students to start from the number given and not start from the beginning, i.e., 1.
    • Allow students to pause to figure out what numbers come next.
    • When they arrive at an answer, ask them how they got there.
    • Remind students that counting in sequence involves one more (if going forwards) and one less (if going backwards).

THEORY:

  • When teaching counting from any number within 120, it involves rote counting from any given number, not having to go back to the beginning and start from one.

  • This means that students need to use strategies when counting to avoid this, and requires the students to have sound knowledge of counting sequence.
  • Example:
  • If we present the number 5, students know that the following numbers in the sequence are 6, 7, 8, etc.

  • When presented with a larger number, like 57, students need to know the ones increase in sequence until the tens unit changes. For example, one’s unit will increase to 58 and 59.

  • When 9 is reached in the one’s unit, students must know that adding another one will mean the one’s unit becomes 0, and the tens unit will increase by one to become 6, or sixty.
