LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10 using objects.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching addition and subtraction word problems, try the following in your lesson:
- Use the quantity of objects to correlate with the number. This way, students recognize the quantity with a written digit.
- Teaching vocabulary is important at this stage. Students must be able to correctly associate a written number with the spoken word and its tangible amount. Students must also understand the vocabulary of operations.
THEORY
- The foundation of mathematics is understanding the vocabulary of numbers and operations. To be able to correctly interpret operations, students need to know that addition can include words such as add, sum, more, increase, and plus, while subtraction operations involve words such as less, deduct, minus, take away, and difference. - Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.
