Help students use addition to find the total number in an array of objects arranged in rectangular arrays and write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
See the fact file below for more information on total number of arrays or alternatively, you can download our 23-page Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Addition – Total Number in an Array worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
A Note for the Teacher
When teaching Addition using an Array, the learner needs to:
- Understand that we can find the total number of objects in an array by repeated addition.
- A rectangle array must have equal columns and equal rows.
Theory
We develop the concept of multiplication by using repeated addition. Repeated addition is adding equal groups together. We illustrate this using an array. If the same number is repeated, then we can write that in the form of multiplication.
If we arrange 12 apples into 3 rows, it will look like this:
For this array, we can write two repeated addition sums depending on how we group the apples. We can group them horizontally like this:
This sum will then read 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
Or we can group the apples vertically like this:
