  • At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to learn that subtraction can be used to solve for an unknown addend.

A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER

  • When finding unknown addends, take note of the following:
    • Remember that two addends produce a sum.
    • Understand that subtracting a sum by one addend produces the other addend.
    • Make sure that the numbers in the addition equation are the same as the ones in the subtraction equation. The order of the numbers is the only thing that changes.

THEORY

  • Addition means that a value is given to another value to produce a larger value than the two numbers. Subtraction, on the other hand, means that a value is taken away from another value to produce a smaller number than the value subtracted from.
  • Thus, we can notice that there is a relationship between addition and subtraction.
  • First, let’s recall what a fact family is. It is a group of facts or equations that are created using a set of numbers. Consider the set of numbers below:
    • 2, 3, 5
  • We can create a fact family using these three numbers:
    • 2 + 3 = 5      3 + 2 = 5    5 – 2 = 3    5 – 3 = 2
  • We can observe that adding 2 and 3 indeed produces a larger value of 5. Likewise, the larger value five can be made smaller if a value is subtracted from it.
  • Thus, an addition equation can have the same set of numbers in subtraction. It is only the order of the number that changes. Consider the equation below:
    • 5 + ? = 8
  • The missing number is an addend. Therefore, we need to find out what value produces 8 when it is added to 5. Since we know that addition means adding two smaller values to produce one larger value, we need to find the smaller value by subtracting 5 from 8.
    • 8 – 5 = 3
  • The missing number is 3. We can check our answer by creating a fact family using the three numbers:
    • 8 – 5 = 3     8 – 3 = 5    3 + 5 = 8    5 + 3 = 8
