When we add numbers, we can think about it like counting on. When we subtract numbers we can think about it like counting backwards. Let’s see what numbers we are working with first.
See the fact file below for more information on how to fluently add and subtract within 5 or alternatively, you can download our 19-page Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Fluently add and subtract within 5 CCSS K.OA.5 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will learn to fluently add and subtract within 5 without pictures.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching to add and subtract within 5, try the following in your lesson:
- Use the number of objects to correlate with the number. This way, students recognize the quantity with a written digit.
- Teaching vocabulary is important at this stage. Students must be able to correctly associate a written number with the spoken word and its tangible amount.
THEORY
- When we add numbers, we can think about it like counting on. You start at one number and count up the number of places of your second number. Let’s see what numbers we are working with first.
- ADDITION EXAMPLE
- When we add numbers we can think about it like counting on. You start at one number and count up the number of places of your second number. Let’s see what numbers we are working with first.
- We are adding 3 and 1. If we start at 3 and count up 1, we will find our answer.
- When we subtract numbers we can think about it like counting backwards. You start at one number and count down the number of places of your second number. Let’s see what numbers we are working with first.
- SUBTRACTION EXAMPLE
- There are two ways to tackle a subtraction problem like this. We will show you both methods.
- The Cross Out Method
- The name says it all. You cross out everything you are taking away. Let’s see it in action now. You are subtracting one car from both sides. That leaves you with only one car. That is your answer.
- The Countdown Method
- When adding, we count up, but we do the opposite when subtracting. We count toward zero.
- We are subtracting 1 from 2. 2 – 1
- That is the same thing as saying we are counting back one place from two.
