The order in which you solve operations is an important skill to learn in Mathematicsβmeaning, knowing which operations go first and which operations go last.
See the fact file below for more information on the properties of operations or alternatively, you can download our 20-page Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Properties of Operations CCSS 1.OA.1 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to evaluate expressions using properties of operations.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching properties of operations, keep in mind the following:
- Remind the students now and then of the commutative and associative properties of addition.
- When dealing with addition of 3 whole numbers, they can choose whichever strategy works best for them.
- However, the simplest strategy is to add or subtract from left to right.
THEORY
- The order in which you solve operations is an important skill to learn in Mathematicsβmeaning, knowing which operations go first and which operations go last.
- When solving problems involving addition and subtraction, we apply the commutative property of addition. This means that we can add numbers in any order.
- (eg. 3+7=7+3).
- Furthermore, in groups of numbers, we apply the associative property of addition, which allows us to group numbers in any order
- (e.g. 2+(9+1)=(2+9)+1.)
- This implies that students can learn to apply their unique strategy when adding or subtracting numbers.
- (e.g., grouping numbers in ascending/descending order or grouping the numbers in pairs of biggest to smallest and vise versa).
- The simplest strategy, however, is to add and subtract from left to right.
