A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER

  • When teaching Addition & Subtraction, keep in mind the following:
    • Remind the students that addition is putting things together, while subtraction is taking parts away.
    • Remind the students that it is okay to use figures or objects to help them visualize the problems.

THEORY

  • Addition word problems show an increase in something or the combination of different parts to create a whole.
  • Subtraction word problems show a decrease or loss in something or taking parts of a whole.
  • Each sentence in a word problem can be translated into a mathematical operation.
  • For Addition:
    • You may see keywords such as add, more, increase, received, etc.
  • For Subtraction:
    • You may see keywords such as minus, less, decrease, take away, deduct, etc.
  • When solving a word problem, we always try to understand the situation shown to us. For example, David has 3 pencils. John gave him 10 more. How many pencils does David have now?
  • First, we note how many pencils David had initially, which is 3. Then, John gave him 10 more. Since David received 10 more pencils, it means that we must add 3 and 10 together in order to find out how many pencils he has in total.

  • So, by adding 3 and 10, we found out that David has 13 pencils.
  • When using figures to add, we count the total number of parts.
  • However, what if he gave someone else some pencils?
  • For example, David has 13 pencils. He gave his friend, Marie, 6 pencils. How many pencils does David have left?
  • Since David gave 6 pencils to his friend, that means we subtract.

  • By subtracting 6 from 13, we found out that David has 7 pencils left.
  • When using figures to subtract, we separate how many parts were taken out of the whole, and count how many remain.
