Key Facts & Information
BUNDLE OF ONES
- The number ten (10) is composed of ten ones.
ONES PLACE VALUE
- For two-digit numbers, the rightmost number represents the ones place value.
TENS PLACE VALUE
- The leftmost digit in a two-digit number represents the tens place value.
- This is called the tens place value because it is composed of bundles of tens.
- The leftmost digit or the digit in the tens place represents how many bundles of ten/s can be found in a two-digit number.
COMPARING TWO-DIGIT NUMBERS
- To compare two-digit numbers, we first have to look at the leftmost digit or the one in the tens place.
- Let us compare 13 and 25.
- The leftmost digit of 13 is 1 while the leftmost digit of 25 is 2.
- Now, let us compare the the value of 1 and 2.
- Now, we have established that two is greater than one. Therefore, 25 is greater than 13.
- This is the case when the leftmost digits or the digits in the tens place are not the same.
- What if the leftmost digits of two numbers are the same?
- To compare two-digit numbers, we first have to look at the leftmost digit or the one in the tens place.
- Let us move on to the third case.
- The third case involves both the leftmost digits and the rightmost digits of two numbers being the same.
- In this case, the appropriate sign to use is the equals sign, signifying that the two numbers are equal or the same.
