Multiplication is addition that is done by adding a number to itself a specified number of times, while division is breaking a number up into equal number of parts. But in fact, multiplication and division are closely related. They are opposite operations, and both have to do with groups of equal sizes.
See the fact file below for more information on the properties of operations in multiplication and division or alternatively, you can download our 33-page Properties of Operations in Multiplication and Division worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION: COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY
- The Commutative Property of Multiplication states that changing the grouping of the factors does not change the product.
- A x B = B x A
PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION: ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY
- The Associative Property of Multiplication states that changing the grouping of the factors does not change the product.
- (A x B) x C = A x (B x C)
- Always have in mind that parentheses tell us to do something first.
PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION: IDENTITY PROPERTY
- The Identity Property of Multiplication states that the product of 1 and any number is that number.
- A x 1 = A
- The Commutative Property of Multiplication tells us that it does not matter if 1 comes before or after the number.
PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION: ZERO PROPERTY
- The Zero Property of Multiplication states that the product of 0 and any number is 0.
- A x 0 = 0
- The Commutative Property of Multiplication tells us that it does not matter if 0 comes before or after the number.
PROPERTY OF MULTIPLICATION: DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
- The Distributive Property of Multiplication states that one factor is “rewritten as the sum of two numbers” and the product does not change.
- A x B = A x ( C + D) = (A x C ) + (A x D)
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION
- Multiplication and division are very closely related. They are opposite operations. You could say division is “backwards” multiplication.
