Skip counting is adding a number other than one to get the next number. That means we can skip count by numbers: two, three, four and so on.Β Skip counting is a very useful skill and provides a strong foundation for students learning mathematics.
See the fact file below for more information on the skip counting or alternatively, you can download our 28-page Skip Counting worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment. This worksheet is broken down by Beginner, intermediate and advanced meaning you can choose the complexity level for your student.
Key Facts & Information
Summary:
- Counting: adding one to get the next number (0, 1, 2, 3 ,…..)
- Skip counting: adding a number other than one to get the next number (0, 3, 6, 9, 13, …)
- Can be performed using even and odd numbers
- Very basic skill that will help form a strong foundation and fluency in calculation
What is skip counting?
- Counting is one of the beginner concepts taught when children are being introduced to Mathematics.
- In the beginning basic counting is introduced in which we add one to a number over and over.
- In skip counting we count by a number that is not one. That means we can skip count by numbers: two, three, four and so on.
How skip counting is done ?
- As mentioned before when we are learning basic counting we add βoneβ to get the next number. This is illustrated by the diagram below:
- In skip counting one is replaced by any other number for example two, three, four etc.
- For instance we decide to skip count by two. In this case we will add two to get the next number.
- This is illustrated in the diagram below:
- By looking at the diagram above we can say that skip counting is similar to formulating multiplication table of a given number.
Why is skip counting important?
- Skip counting is a very useful skill and provides a strong foundation for students learning mathematics.
- As it was recently stated that skip counting has similarity with multiplication tables, from this we can say that skip counting will help us in learning the concept of multiplication.
- It will also help us understand the concept of addition and subtraction. By knowing skip counting we can perform these calculations in short duration.
- As all mathematical operations include addition, subtraction and multiplication, therefore a good understanding of skip counting will help students understand all future concepts for example division, fractions, etc.
- Skip counting has use in everyday life to count daily use items and money.
- By learning skip counting children develop mental math skills that will help them throughout their life.
- It also helps develop fluency in calculation.
Skip counting examples
- Here skip counting by different numbers will be explained using tables and number lines so the students can have a better understanding of the concept.
Skip counting by 2s:
- First skip counting by two will be explained, we will continue adding two to get the next number.
- The following equations explain the concept.
0 + 2 = 2
2 + 2 = 4
2 + 4 = 6
6 + 2 = 8
8 + 2 = 10
10 + 2 = 12
- Next the number line will be used to explain the same concept.
- We will move from left to right. Zero will be our starting point. We will jump by an interval of two, as shown in the diagram below. Each jump will give us our next number.
- The diagram below summarizes skip counting by two:
Skip counting by 5s:
- Here skip counting by five will be explained, we will continue adding five to get the next number. The following equations explain the concept.
0 + 5 = 5
5 + 5 = 10
10 + 5 = 15
15 + 5 = 20
20 + 5 = 25
25 + 5 = 30
- Now the number line will be used to explain the same concept. Zero will be the starting point for this case too. We will jump by an interval of five, as shown in the diagram below. Each jump will give us our next number.
- The diagram below summarizes skip counting by five:
Skip counting by 10s:
- The following equations explain the concept:
0 + 10 = 10
10 + 10 = 20
20 + 10 = 30
30 + 10 = 40
40 + 10 = 50
50 + 10 = 60
- The number line for skip counting by ten is shown below:
- The diagram below summarizes skip counting by ten:
Skip counting by 8s:
- Similar steps will be followed for skip counting by eight, the digit eight will be added to get the next number. The following equations explain the concept:
0 + 8 = 8
8 + 8 = 16
16 + 8 = 24
24 + 8 = 32
32 + 8 = 40
40 + 8 = 48
- The number line for skip counting by eight is shown below:
- The diagram below summarizes skip counting by eight:
- This shows that we can skip count using any number other than one.
- This includes both even and odd numbers. This skill will help us understand advance concepts faster.
- It helps develop a better understanding of numbers.
- The table below shows skip counting using different numbers:
